With the start of the school year, the Town of Paradise is reminding all residents to use extra caution in all school zones. There are four schools in Paradise: Elizabeth Park Elementary (Ellesmere Avenue), Holy Family Elementary (St. Thomas Line), Octagon Pond Elementary (Sgt Donald Lucas Drive) and Paradise Elementary (Karwood Drive).
During the school year, and in particular this first week back to school, drivers are asked to reduce speeds near the schools and watch for students walking and playing in the area. Children may not be as attentive this first week back after summer break and our drivers are reminded to pay special attention when near any of the four schools in Town.
To assist with school safety, the Town of Paradise Municipal Enforcement Officers (MEOs) will increase patrols in all school zones for the back-to-school period. In addition, the Town is liaising with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary to increase patrols in these areas.
For Octagon Pond Elementary School, road construction is nearing completion on Topsail Road in the vicinity of the school. The Town is working to install Pedestrian Activated Traffic Lights, crosswalks and sidewalks in the area. This work is a priority and expected to be completed in the coming weeks. Until the traffic signal is in place, the Town will provide safety crews to assist with traffic control for the safe crossing of students Monday to Friday during the opening (morning) and dismissal (afternoon) periods for the school.
The Town thanks all drivers and residents for their cooperation in helping to ensure safe school zones. To all students, teachers and staff, best wishes for a successful and enjoyable school year.
